Silver Birch

Growth & Seasons:
Graceful and fast-growing, with papery white bark and delicate, triangular leaves that flutter in the wind. Catkins appear in early spring before the leaves, offering pollen for early insects. A pioneer species, birch is among the first to colonise cleared or poor ground, improving the soil for others.

Mythology & Symbolism:
In Celtic lore, birch represents renewal, purification, and beginnings. Associated with the goddess Brigid and Beltane, birch twigs were once used to drive away evil spirits and “sweep clean” the old year, with the use of Besom brooms.

Traditional Uses:
The bark was used to make containers and kindling; sap was tapped for a refreshing, cleansing drink. Birch leaves and bark were traditionally brewed for joint pain and skin conditions — seen as a purifier for both body and land.

This Tree:
Planted in local peat-free compost in a recycled and reusable plastic pot. As it's still young, this tree hasn't yet developed it's silver bark, but given time it will. This tree will thrive when planted in the ground.
